AOPA Aerobatics Certificate
The Air Navigation Order 2016 definition:
“aerobatic manoeuvres” means loops, spins, rolls, bunts, stall turns, inverted flying and any other similar manoeuvre intentionally performed by an aircraft involving:
(a) an abrupt change in its attitude;
(b) an abnormal attitude; or
(c) an abnormal variation in speed,
not necessary for normal flight or for instruction for licences or ratings other than aerobatic rating.
There are three AOPA Aerobatic Certificate Courses, which can only be offered by current Corporate Members of AOPA who are registered to provide Aerobatic Training :
- Basic
- Standard
- Intermediate
All of the courses cover learning various aerobatic manoeuvres. AOPA together with the British Aerobatic Association (BAeA) have designed these syllabi of instruction in order to encourage those pilots who wish to become proficient in aerobatic manoeuvres to undertake the right training through a properly structured formal course. These courses are also required if pilots want to take part in Aerobatic events organised by the BAeA.
AOPA Wings Award Scheme
The original Wings Award Scheme, developed by AOPA, provides you with a structured framework to develop and maintain your flying skills andwhile you enjoy flying.
It is freely available to be adopted by any Flying Club, Pilot Group or individual Pilots. You can even propose your own local activities to make the scheme more meaningful to you where you are based, subject to validation by AOPA.
FI(A) & CRI(A) Refresher Course
AOPA UK is a CAA Approved Training Organisation (ATO), Number PTO-107 and meets the requirements of Part FCL for Flight Instructor Rating and Class Rating Instructor revalidation
Our course is structured for instructors teaching across the complete range of ab initio, CPL and IR students.

Please note that we no longer cover FI(H) renewals/revalidations at AOPA Courses.
Under CAA rules you may attend a seminar any time during the validity of your FI Rating.
AOPA Ground Instructor Certificate
The AOPA Ground Instructor Certificate (GIC) has now been simplified and revised for 2020. It meets ORA.ATO.110(c) and DTO.GEN.210(d) for the provision of Theoretical Knowledge training
AOPA Radio Navigation Course
The AOPA Radio Navigation Course has been structured to encourage pilots who hold either a UK Issued Part-FCL PPL or a UK NPPL to obtain formal training in radio navigation procedures for use under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) in accordance with the privileges of their licence.
Additionally, for holders of a UK Issued Part-FCL PPL, the course of training can be taken as a progressive step towards obtaining a UK IMC/IR(R) Rating.
This means that a PPL holder who has qualified for the AOPA Radio Navigation Certificate may be exempt from up to five hours instrument training of the Applied Stage of the IMC course (without time limit).
AOPA Flying Companions Certificate
The AOPA Flying Companions Certificate Course has been designed to increase the enjoyment, participation and confidence in flying for those who regularly accompany private pilots. This includes the safe recovery and landing at an appropriate airfield as a result of an emergency.
The course should be available from any flight training organisation that is a corporate member of AOPA.
